Medical Transcription Rates

Medical Transcription Rates May Vary Widely.

The medical transcription rates that many transcription services quote will vary in relation to several different factors.

1. They will look at the volume of work that each medical practice or health professional requires transcribing. 2. They will look at what type of transcription it is that the health professional or medical practice wants carried out (whether they are normal or STAT transcriptions). 3. Plus, they will look to see what type of medical practice it is. Some services will charge a much higher rate to those who are wanting work transcribed in relation to a specialist medical practice.

However, in most cases you will find that they do not tie you into a specific time for your contract to last; or how much or how little work you want transcribed. However, you may well discover that you get better rates if you decide to use only one service for all of your transcription requirements.

So just how do they set their rates when it comes to transcription work?

Generally, most medical transcription services will charge their clients per line. Often this can range for $0.07 up to $0.14 per line. When we are talking per line, it is each line as you would see it in a word or text document. So the amount that a service would charge, say, for this little paragraph if you were using one of the more reputable services, is going to cost you about $0.83. Today, the standard that most transcription services have is that 65 characters make up a line, and this includes the spaces as well. However, be warned that not all transcription services will use this standard for working out their rates if they are charging their clients per line. In some cases, they may define their lines as those which have fewer characters or those where the line actually breaks naturally. So it is important that you ensure that you get full details from each of the services that you are considering using in relation to how they calculate their per line rates.

However, there are some services who will charge their clients on a report by report basis instead. Often, this rate will be provided to those health professionals who are submitting a very high volume of short reports (for example radiologists). But certainly if you want to you should be able to negotiate such a deal for your practice if you so wish.

Also, the medical transcription rates that these various services charge will depend on the type of dictation method being used. For those professionals who are using digital dictation systems -- which allows the work to be downloaded directly from one PC system to another -- they will often find that the rate charged is much less than for those health professionals who dictate their notes using a phone system. Often there can be as much as a 2 cent difference in the rates that are being charged. So you will need to take your time and look at what you have available in order to decide what the best services are, and who provides the best rate in order to meet your requirements.
