Digital Medical Transcription: Help For The New Professioinal.
|
Today in the US, it is now mandatory for all medical professionals to keep accurate medical records with regard to all those people that they have as patients. Normally, most medical professionals will gather their information together on a particular patient through the use of a Dictaphone or voice recorder. Once dictated, this work then needs to be transcribed and this is the job of a Medical Transcriptionist (MT). Over the years, the methods in relation to medical transcription have evolved, and with the introduction of the internet, digital medical transcription has now become big business. Through the introduction of digital transcription, a health professional can now arrange to have the notes they make transcribed by an MT -- anywhere in the world, and at any time of day or night. All digital recordings made by doctors can now be downloaded by those employed as MT's from a central source, who can then transcribe them all from the comfort of their own homes. Then upon completion, the transcript can then be uploaded back onto the system in its text format. Today, most digital medical transcription work is now carried out by people who live outside the USA... in South East Asian countries mostly. The reason why this has happened is that the cost for outsourcing such work is considerably lower compared to at-home work in the US. Plus, these countries also have a high number of readily available, highly educated people that they can employ. Also, as there is a time gap between these countries and the US, this means that health professionals in the US are able to gather their information from their various patients during the day and then upload their data once they have completed their days work. Then they know by the time that they get into work the next morning, the transcriptions will have been returned to them completed. In order for someone to carry out digital medical transcription work they will need a computer with a good quality word processing program, an internet connection or access, a good library of medical reference books and dictionaries, and a good quality medical spell check software program. Also, a word expander program such as PRD or Shortcuts is useful, as this will help to speed up the transcriptionist's typing speeds for the simple reason that it allows a person to type abbreviations onto the system and then it will automatically convert these into either longer words or phrases. Plus a transcriptionist will need a good comfortable chair which provides them with adequate lumbar support, because you need to remember that they spend long hours sitting in front of their computers and keyboards. Finally, all those who do medical transcription work should also ensure that they have a good quality English dictionary beside their desks at all times, which will help to provide them with the essentials in relation to writing good quality documents. |
