Today, dictation transcription can be produced through using a number of different transcribing methods. The most common probably of all forms of dictation devices are those known as portable recorders or Dictaphones. These can easily be found through either your local office supply store or online. Generally, they cost between $50 and $500 depending upon the type of device you choose. Although originally they would use small tapes, many are now able to record the spoken word digitally. Once recorded, the machine is then connected to a computer using either a USB cable or a cradle, and the file then can be downloaded and transcribed by a secretary or typist in to text format.

However, in order for the work to be transcribed either by a secretary in house or by a dictation transcription service, they will need to have the correct type of software installed on their computer system. As well as the right kind of software, the person transcribing the dictated work will also require a good set of headphones along with a foot pedal, which then allows them to pause, fast forward and rewind the work that they are listening to.
